-
- Every Apollo accellerator I've seen so far is over-clocked :-( I've even
- seem them clocking 33Mhz 030s to 50Mhz.... And people wonder why their
- machines always crash.... (note: this is in the UK. I've no idea if
- Apollo cards sold elsewhere are fitted with overclocked chips or not)
-
- Having said that, the official 50Mhz 030 part does run very hot. I have
- (or had) a Microbotics 1230XA in my A1200 with a 50Mhz chip. It runs
- bloody hot indeed. As long as you don't try and run it with the trapdoor
- lid on it goes fine though.
-
- Check the number on the chip. it will be something like 68030-25,
- 68EC030-40, or something like that. The last two digits are the speed.
-
- If it is < the speed your board claims to run at, or if the digits have
- been obscured or scraped off (yes, I've seen that too recently) DEMAND A
- REPLACEMENT. It is NOT safe to run a 68030 chip faster than the claimed
- clock rate under any circumstances. The chip will have a dramatically
- lower lifetime and it will produce errors (ie crash) a lot.
-
- If you can't replace it, get a new clock crystal rated at the same speed
- as your CPU and run the board a0t the speed the CPU was intended for.
-
- We've had more than a few people phone up our support line wanting to
- know why software we've supplied crashes with their accelerator. On
- further investigation we find most of the time that a) they've just
- inserted an Apollo card and b) all their other software seems to crash a
- lot too.
-
- We have now had to refuse to support our software running on over-clocked
- accelerators due to the number of problems (although I go at great
- lengths over the phone trying to explain to people what overclocking is
- and why it's bad).
-
- If you're running an overclocked machine and it seems to work, good
- luck...
